Less loose coat around the house

Deshedding at Spunky Cuts is coat care aimed at loose hair, for cats and dogs whose shedding is getting ahead of you. It is a separate option from a haircut, so the coat keeps its length while the loose hair is dealt with.

Is this for us?

Sounds familiar?

Pet owners usually ask about deshedding when they notice some of these:

  • “There’s hair on the couch an hour after I vacuum.”
  • “I brush and brush, and the brush keeps filling up.”
  • “Tufts are coming loose and floating around the floor.”
  • “Their coat looks puffy and dull, not smooth.”
  • “I want the coat to stay long, but with less fluff left behind.”

If that matches what’s happening at your place, deshedding is a good thing to ask about. If you’re actually after a shorter coat, take a look at full-service grooming, which includes a haircut.

A little coat background

Why some pets shed more

Shedding is normal. Hair grows, rests and falls out in cycles. The amount you find around the house depends a lot on the coat type. Here’s some general background to help you describe your pet when you get in touch.

Double coats

Many dogs have a soft, dense undercoat under longer guard hairs. Loose undercoat can get caught in the outer layer, so a coat can look full when a lot of the hair underneath has already come free.

Seasonal surges

Plenty of pets shed more heavily at certain times of year. Owners often notice it as a sudden “blowout”, with a lot more loose hair than usual over a few weeks.

Cats too

Cats shed as well, and long-haired cats especially can hold loose hair that tangles. Tell the shop whether you’re booking for a cat or a dog, and how your cat usually handles being groomed.

What to expect

Loose hair out, length left alone

In general, deshedding focuses on loosening and removing hair that has already let go of the skin, rather than cutting the coat shorter. The tools and steps depend on the coat. That’s why it helps to talk through your pet’s coat before the visit, not assume one routine fits every animal.

A realistic expectation: deshedding cuts down on the loose hair a coat is holding at the moment. It won’t stop shedding for good, because new hair keeps cycling through. How long the effect lasts depends on the coat, the season and how much brushing happens at home.

When you call, ask how long the visit is likely to take for your pet, what the price will be for the care you’ve discussed, and whether deshedding could be paired with a bath and blow dry or nail trimming and grinding on the same visit.

Before you book

Worth mentioning when you call

Booking is handled manually, so the more you share up front, the easier it is to work out what suits your pet. These details are helpful:

Please don’t try to cut mats out with scissors before the visit. Skin can sit very close under a tight mat and is easy to nick. Just let the shop know they’re there.

Deshedding is grooming, not medical care. If you see sudden heavy hair loss, bald patches, scabs, redness or constant scratching, have your veterinarian check your pet first.

Keeping up at home

Regular short brushing sessions usually go better than one long struggle. Brush in the direction the hair grows, and check behind the ears, under the legs and around the collar, because loose hair often gathers there first.

Ask which brush type suits your pet’s coat. A tool that works on a short, smooth coat may barely get into a thick undercoat. Keep sessions calm and stop before your pet gets fed up. You can always pick it up again tomorrow.
